Woman arrested in Narok while trying to sell children

Police in Narok town are investigating a 34 year old woman after she was allegedly arrested while trying to sell her two children.

The woman from Majengo area was reportedly arrested by two police officers posing as potential buyers for her 4 year-old daughter and 8 year-old son at Sh200,000 each.

Confirming the incident, Narok North OCPD Paul Letting said police arrested the woman, Zainab Akumu, after a good Samaritan informed them of her intentions.

The OCPD said the woman claimed to have eight children and that she was widowed and  unemploymed hence could not provide for her family. The woman said she hoped to use the amount to initiate a business to enable her provide for the rest of her family.

“I have been selling groceries and engaging in menial jobs that do not enable me to sustain their daily meals that is why opted to sell these children,”  said the woman adding that she could not withstand seeing them go without food. She lamented that her attempts to seek help had borne no fruit.

Letting has said they are holding the suspect to facilitate investigations to uncover child trafficking syndicates.
