Thugs broke into the Machakos lands office and stole five computers worth Sh400,000 at around 5am on Friday.
The computers had vital administrative data that is however backed up, said Energy and Natural Resources executive Kioko wa Luka.
Luka said the thugs accessed the building through its back door, either using their own keys or because it had been left open.
"We cannot rule out the possibility of an inside job but police say they have good leads," he said at the office.
Luka said the thieves also broke into several administrative offices on the block.
He asked residents to report suspicious cases of the sale of computers.
Four employees including the watchman on duty have recorded statements on the incident.
The lands office is located opposite the county commissioner's office and is near a National Intelligence Service station.
